ScienceSoft Predicts One in Ten US Medical Visits Will Be Virtual by 2030

Published:

ScienceSoft has published a prediction article based on its proprietary research into the future of telemedicine adoption in the United States. Kate Lukina, MD, Hadeel Abu Baker, and Julia Lebedeva forecast that by 2030, one in ten US medical visits could take place virtually, with gradual growth expected across mental health, endocrinology, obstetrics, and primary care.

The research team at ScienceSoft analyzed telehealth utilization statistics, regulatory and reimbursement developments, patient access barriers, and opinions from healthcare industry leaders. Telehealth has consistently accounted for approximately 6–7% of US medical visits since 2022, indicating that virtual care has retained a stable role after the pandemic-era surge. However, future growth will largely depend on permanent government support, including the future of Medicare telehealth flexibilities, currently extended through December 31, 2027.

The article also examines the unequal pace of adoption. Mental health remains the leading specialty, with 28.5% of encounters conducted virtually in March 2026. At the same time, broadband and technology access continue to restrict virtual care in underserved communities: 94% of community health center leaders identified limited patient access to broadband or technology as a major telehealth challenge.

ScienceSoft expects telemedicine to become a permanent part of hybrid healthcare delivery rather than replace in-person care. Providers may gain additional capacity and support hospital-at-home models, while patients may benefit from more convenient access to follow-ups, mental healthcare, and chronic condition management. Payers may see opportunities to support preventive care but will need to address service verification and fraud risks.
