ScienceSoft Supports the Launch of AcuFlex: A First-of-Its-Kind Platform for Real-Time Mobility and Dorsiflexion Assessment

ScienceSoft is proud to announce its partnership with S.A.E. Orthopedics, an Illinois-based startup founded by orthopedic surgeon and medical device researcher Dr. J. Michael Davis. Together, the teams have developed AcuFlex, a connected movement assessment and rehabilitation platform. Combining a sensor-enabled slant board with secure iOS, Android, and web apps, the system is designed to help clinicians objectively measure ankle dorsiflexion range of motion, joint mobility, and posterior chain viscoelastic response.

S.A.E. Orthopedics was established to bring to life Dr. Davis’s vision of a more measurable, personalized, and accountable approach to musculoskeletal recovery. Each year, millions of Americans experience mobility limitations and lower extremity conditions that could benefit from more structured, data-informed intervention: symptomatic knee osteoarthritis, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, and more. Yet rehabilitation and stretching routines often remain subjective and hard to track — something AcuFlex aims to change.

Designed for both injury prevention (prehabilitation) and clinician-guided rehabilitation, AcuFlex replaces guesswork in lower extremity mobility assessment. During short stretching sessions, the platform captures real-time dorsiflexion and mobility data for each leg, allowing clinicians to evaluate execution quality, monitor progress, and adjust patient loads more safely. Session trends and optimal angle benchmarks help inform treatment decisions across clinical, athletic, military, and home-based environments.

In orthopedic practice, we often rely on visual estimates and patient feedback to gauge flexibility and recovery. As S.A.E. Orthopedics' technology partner, ScienceSoft supported the platform from the first proof of concept to a submission-ready MVP, developing the iOS, Android, and web apps, as well as the platform’s back end and data security infrastructure. ScienceSoft also supported S.A.E. Orthopedics’ preparation for its FDA submission by assembling the software documentation package, including the cybersecurity file and software risk management plan, and advising on FDA expectations for connected healthcare products.
